Minister for Communications and Acting Minister for Culture, Mr Ong Teng Cheong opens 'Communic Asia 79', the Asian International Electronic Communication Exhibition and Conference at Hyatt Hotel (on 05/12/1979). He says the Electronics Communications Exhibition held for the first time in Singapore coincides with the 100 years of telecommunication commemorated in 1979. Singapore Telecoms uses the event to affirm its commitment to modernise and maintain Singapore in the forefront of communications. He also announces that the Communications Ministry is considering whether Telecom and the Postal Department could be merged in national interest mainly because they are competing for the same market with electronic mail.
Minister for National Development and Communications, Mr Lim Kim San at the commissioning ceremony for 10,000 lines of telephone switching equipment at Ang Mo Kio (AMK) Telephone Exchange on 03/08/1977. He touches on the Telecoms' plan for the AMK New Town adding that Telecoms has done well to satisfy the 'phenomenal increase in the demand for telephones'. He says Telecoms' objective is to 'provide an efficient and trouble-free network for private and public use' and to provide a 'high standard of excellence'.
This 'Friday Background' programme features three topics. First, Telecommunication's newest venture, which is the South East Asian - Middle East - Western Europe (SE-ME-WE) submarine cable. Mr Sun Sio Ma, Assistant General Manager of Telecoms explains how submarine cables work and its advantages over satellite communication systems.
