  Barth works with Cable & Wireless Limited. He is the Telecoms Traffic representative during his time. Barth explains at length how to operate a telex machine and how telecommunication charges keep going down, yet companies are able to stay profitable. Even with huge improvements in technology, there was never any redundancy and the human element was not replaced. When satellite communication was first introduced, there were doubts as to its reliability. Following Singapore's separation from Malaysia, some people were anxious as to how we were going to survive. These concerns proved unfounded as Singapore's industrialisation programme attracted foreign investment into Singapore. This drove up demand for telecommunication services. A good telecommunications infrastructure was needed to support this growth.
