The Ministry of Information and the Arts (MITA) was formed in 1990 from the former Information Service under the Ministry of Communications and Information when it took on new roles and responsibilities.

MITA acts as the public relations arm of the Government and disseminates Government press to the media, facilitates journalists' interviews with ministers and senior officials as well as coverage of ministerial functions and international meetings held in Singapore. Its function is also to educate and entertain, as part of Singapore's national goal to make it a hub city of the world and to build a society that is economically dynamic, socially cohesive and culturally vibrant. It thus overseas the development of the broadcast, in print and media, as well as the arts and heritage sectors, mainly through its statutory boards like the NHB, NLB and the NAC.
