Interviews
Mr Yeo Lee Hock was the Superintendent of Woodlands Home for the Aged until its closure in 1997. He joined the Public Assistance Section of the Social Welfare Department in 1966 as Investigator for applications for Public Assistance. In this interview, he relates how Konfrontasi rendered a lot of people unemployed for a while, and how the Public Assistance recipients did not always self-report when they found employment (and so no longer qualified for Public Assistance).
Mrs Ann Wee worked for some time (mid 1950s) in the Public Assistance Section in the early days of the Social Welfare Department. In this interview, she speaks about her experience working in the Havelock Road Social Welfare Department, and subsequently in "a huge Public Assistance Section", and "going out a lot with the Public Assistance Investigators." She observed then that, "there was so much destitution... In those days the problem was young families where even the breadwinner couldn't get a job. Everybody seemed to be living on odd jobs."
Mr Chia Cheong Fook was Assistant Director of the Ministry of Social Affairs in the early 1960s. He joined the civil service in 1954 as a Public Assistance Investigator in the Social Welfare Department. In his oral history, he describes his work of investigating public assistance applications - specifically, emergency Public Assistance. He pointed out that the SWD was only established after the war, and that Emergency Relief Fund was disbursed at Victoria Memorial Hall.
