resignation be accepted & that a civil servant qualified for the office be appointed thereto.

Under the circumstances of Mr Hutton's refusal to examine those of the junior servants who have reported themselves capable of reading & writing the Malay Language, the Board have not the means of ascertaining how far any of them are qualified; therefore at present to not think it expedient to select from among the junior servants a permanent successor.

Resolved therefore that as Mr Lawrence has not repeatedly offered himself for examination & is generally understood to have made great proficiency in the Malay Language, that he be appointed Acting Malay Translator with the present salary & Establishment attached to that situation; & that he receive charge from Mr Hutton on the 1st of the ensuing month; & that Mr Hutton be directed to deliver over to Mr Lawrence the records, books &ca. now under his charge.
