13 outstanding designers and designs honoured with
Singapore’s top design accolade - the President’s Design Award 2012
President Tony Tan Keng Yam presented Singapore’s most prestigious design award to four designers and nine design projects at the President’s Design Award ceremony held earlier this evening at the Istana.
2 In its seventh year, the award is Singapore’s highest honour accorded to designers and design projects. It recognises the achievements and contributions of Singapore designers who are making a difference to the lives of Singaporeans and that of the larger global community. A bumper crop of 139 nominations were received for both the ‘Designer of the Year’ and ‘Design of the Year’ categories.
3 “This year’s recipients and their works come from a variety of design disciplines, but converge in their fusion of excellence and creativity. The diversity and quality of these 13 recipients’ works underscore a growing embrace of good design across industries in Singapore. We celebrate designers who have achieved exceptional design innovation as well as those who have enhanced the user’s experience through design. We also recognise designers whose work reaffirms the relevance of traditional and much-loved spaces and objects presenting them to a new modern audience. And of course, we pay tribute to the standard bearers of design excellence whose influence and works extend beyond Singapore’s shores. This year’s awards will undoubtedly enhance the nation’s growing reputation as a global city for design,” said Mr Robert Tomlin, Chairman, President’s Design Award 2012 Steering Committee and Chairman, DesignSingapore Council.
4 Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer, Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) said: “The winning residential architectural projects for this year are an apt reflection of the importance that we place on the quality of life and liveability in Singapore, and the significant contributions of the architecture fraternity in this area. From a simple house that successfully integrates old and new, to an elegant building that mediates the transition between the house and the city, Singapore architects have gone beyond just aesthetics to offer new ways of living. I look forward to seeing more groundbreaking works in the coming years that can successfully address new challenges in sustainable development and continue to meet rising aspirations for a better quality of life.”
5 “The works of the recipients bear testament to the wide-ranging impact good design can bring to our lives – from refining our living environment, to enhancing a footballer’s performance by repositioning the studs of his boots. Whether graphic, product or architecture designs, the underlying principle that threads through their design innovations is the application of insights and observations that are drawn from the user. This year’s President’s Design Award recipients have once again moved the needle and made a strong case for businesses to continue to push for design-driven innovation,” said Mr Jeffrey Ho, Executive Director, DesignSingapore Council.
6 Administered by the DesignSingapore Council of the Ministry of Communications and Information, and the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the award is presented in two categories – Designer of the Year and Design of the Year. Four individuals and nine designs have been conferred the award this year.
