Singapore Dollar and the Money Changers on the Causeway

After Singapore became an independent and sovereign country, it had to think of what currency to adopt. Eventually, the Currency Act 1967 granted Singapore the authority to issue its own currency, leading to the introduction of the Singapore Dollar on 12 June 1967. Hence, travellers to Malaysia had to exchange the Singapore Dollar to the Malaysian Dollar (known as the Malaysian Ringgit from 1975) for use, and vice versa. Booths facilitating the exchange of Singapore currency to Malaysian currency were set up on the Singapore side of the Causeway and operated by officials from the Board of Commissioners of Currency Singapore.
