Stories from Our Communities

The National Archives of Singapore (NAS) launched a community-driven oral history project in 2017. Four committees were formed from the Chinese, Eurasian, Indian and Malay communities to help record our stories. Here are some stories from our communities.

Stories from Our Communities (2025)

1. Jeremy Monteiro is an internationally acclaimed Singaporean jazz pianist, vocalist, composer, and music educator.
2. Lien Ying Chow founded Overseas Union Bank (OUB), which became a major Southeast Asian bank until its acquisition by United Overseas Bank (UOB) in 2001. He was also renowned for his philanthropy and established the Lien Foundation.
3. Rilla Melati Bahri is a pioneer in developing Malay speech and drama programmes for schools in Singapore. She founded Mini Monsters and has authored numerous children's storybooks in both Malay and bilingual formats.
4. Sarjit Kaur Khosa is a retired educator who serves as the Vice President of the Ladies Wing of the Singapore Khalsa Association.

Stories from Our Communities (2023)

1. Seng Thai Chong is a veteran of the Chinese book industry, particularly renowned as the former managing director of The Commercial Press (Singapore) Pte Ltd. He is also a published author who writes under the pen name Cheng Jun.
2. Sylvia McCully is a prominent figure in Singapore's ballet scene, having founded the Sylvia McCully School of Dancing in 1980, which nurtures aspiring dancers.
3. Vijayam Balakrishna Sharma was a former principal of Farrer Primary School and a celebrated Carnatic singer known for her impact on music and education.
4. Mohamed Salleh Marican is an entrepreneur who founded the menswear shop Second Chance in 1975, which became the first Malay company listed on the Stock Exchange of Singapore in 1997.
