ff. 4r-10r Admiralty to C.O.. Misunderstanding of the proposals for a pass through the Causeway. This is only a remote possibility. A gap of 150 feet through which a capital ship could pass at short notice i.e. a swing or bascule bridge. Admiralty ask that the consulting engineers be asked to provide designs and estimates (ff. 6r-6v) ff. 9r,10r Reply of C.O., 24 Jan. estimate cost of such a bridge would be �750,000. ff. 14r-15r Admiralty to W.O., 14 Feb. Copied to C.O. Strategic effect of the Causeway. There is the possibility that a naval base might be constructed. The report from the Merlin has been received. ff. 22r-28v Further correspondence on the proposed changes f. 23r Admiral to C.O. 7 March. Meeting at the Admiralty on 25 Feb decided that the heavy expenditure cannot be justified ff. 64r-67r Crown Agents, 4 Jan. Are still discussing the request of the Admiralty to modify the deign to provide for a draw bridge or something similar. Survey being undertaken by HMS 'Merlin'. There was a conference held at the C.O. on 29 November 1919 to discuss this issue (see CO 537/894,895,897-902)
