Two Indonesians condemned to death for their part in a bomb incident in which 3 people died. Please for clemency from Soeharto. Concerns that the Indonesian Government might take retaliatory action. Men were executed and their bodies returned to Jakarta amidst some ceremony. including a State Funeral. Strong police guard around the Singapore Embassy in Jakarta. Fears of safety of Singaporeans in Indonesia. Singapore embassy and diplomatic staff houses ransacked and contents destroyed. Ambassador and his staff have left the country. Protests, mainly by students in other parts of the country, including Surabaya which included attacks on the Chinese population. Minor protests in Kuala Lumpur. Views of the British that the Singapore Govt underestimated the strength of feeling in Indonesia but they have 'ridden the storm coolly' . But 'the repercussions will continue to affect relations between the two countries in the months and years ahead'. Papers include text of statement by the Singapore Govt. as to the justification behind the executions and conversations between the Singapore officials in Jakarta and their British counterparts.
