Foreign Pol. Cons. 28 Jan 1857 No. 8 - Political letter from the Secretary of State to the Governor General of India, transmitting responses to various reports on the Straits Settlements Narratives for the first and second quarters of 1855. Matters discussed include:
1) Native Chiefs being informed of the Victory of the Alma;
2) the satisfactory conclusion of a treaty between the Sultan and Tumongong of Johore;
3) Native Chiefs being informed of the resignation of Colonel Butterworth from the Straits Government;
4) seizure of a local belonging to the Tumongong of Johore and a Singapore cargo boat at places within the jurisdiction of Siam;  
5) application from the Tumongong of Johore for British soldiers to drill his men;
6) trade interference on the River Lingey by chieftains who have erected stockades on the banks to levy tolls; and
7) pirate attack on a small vessel owned by a Chinese merchant at Singapore and proposed measures to deal with the problem of piracy.
