FCO 24/1283: Disputes over Territorial Waters of the Malacca Straits. Part A. Secret
01/01/1972 - 31/12/1972
Indonesian complaints about the unannounced passage of Russian and US fleets through the Malacca Straits. They intend to require advance warning of such movements and Malaysia may follow suit. British unease at this. Tripartite agreement between Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand delimiting the northern part of the Straits. Mention of the joint statement of 16 November 1971 of the governments of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore on the consultations on questions concerning the Straits of Malacca and the Singapore Straits. Agreed that the safety of navigation is the responsibility of the three states and that they intended to establish an appropriate body to oversee this. However the Soviets consider the Straits free to universal navigation without any restrictions.
