This is an original letter written by Stamford Raffles to John Crawfurd dated 23rd January 1824 regarding the founding of Raffles Institution.
Transcription: "Sir, With reference to the resolution of the Governor-General in Council communicated to you by Hon. Secretary, Lushington, under date of 6th November, last, relative to the Singapore Institution, I have, in order toprevent the possibility of any misconception with regard to the intentions of the Supreme Government on this head as well as to provide as far as possible against inconvenience which might arise from the want of funds to carry on the schools, to request that you will, at any rate, continue to disburse the sum of 300 dollars a month on this amount or as much of it as may be required for the maintenance of the schools, on my personal responsibility and account if necessary, holding me answerable personally to refund whatever amount may be disbursed on this account and not confirmed by the Court of Directors.” [Source: Wijeysingha, E.
