The 21st August 1826 enquiries heard of its being sold under 6½ and 7. [Beech de mer / Beche de mer] is rated at 20 Dollars per pecul, at Singapore it stands at 50 to 55. Birds nests are rated at 2000 per pecul, at Singapore they stand at from 2,500 to 4,000. By a reduced valuation so much revenue is lost, and the total value of the trade is diminished in account. I propose therefore that the tariff be carefully revised every quarter, submitted to Government for confirmation, and to be in force when sanctioned until again revised. The Collector will be careful not to underrate the value, if objections be urged by merchants, they will be submitted to Government where they will meet with due consideration.
