FCO 26/1956: Foreign and Commonwealth Office Information, News and Guidance Departments. BBC Far East Relay Station. Singapore: sale of former site at Plentong, Malaysia
1979
Papers including correspondence and newspaper cuttings relating to the sale of the Tebrau transmitter site. After the completion of the BBC Far East Relay Station at Kranji, the site at Tebrau in Johore is surplus to requirements and will be sold. The sale is by private treaty to avoid publicising the presence of the BBC in Malaysia. Complaints in Johore that the site should have been handed over to the government and calls for the government of Johore to take over the site. Note that it was through the personal initiative of Lee Kuan Yew that the site was relocated to Kranji. Comments on the rumour that cuts to the BBC's external services might cause the closure of the station at Kranji.
