Correspondence chiefly between the British Embassy in Tokyo and the F.O. In London describing the state of relations between the two countries and the views on the intentions of the Japanese. Impact of events in China including the Japanese advances on that country and of the Soviet-German non-aggression pact. Account of the arrest of British subjects in Japan in 1940 and the closing of the Japanese consulate in Singapore in 1941 amid deteriorating relations between the two countries. Also includes reports and newspaper cuttings. Important background information to the beginning of the War in the Far East
