FCO 141/15204: Singapore: position of Christmas Island under the new Constitution - migrated archives
01/01/1955-31/12/1957
Documents relating to the history and current status of Christmas Island and the negotiations to hand over responsibility for the island from Singapore to Australia in conjunction with the granting of self government to Singapore. The papers cover all aspects of life on the islands but notably the extraction and export of phosphates, the use of the territory for the SEATO base in the SW Pacific Ocean and concerns expressed by Indonesia of intrusion into their air space of flights from the islands and the possibility that the Indonesians might lay claim to the islands. Documents include a record of discussions as to whether Lim Yew Hock, as Chief Minister of Singapore, should be informed of the handover.
