797.00_7-2061: Union of Malayan Labour Party and Socialist Front proposal
20/07/1961
American Embassy London informed American Embassy Kuala Lumpur that Dr Tan Chee Khoon Malayan Labour Party leader, on a private visit to Europe, informed them of the possibility of the Malayan Labour Party and Socialist Front uniting to fight against the Alliance.  Dr Lim Chong Eu had approached the Socialist Front Chairman, Ahmad Boestamam with the proposal. Dr Tan considers the proposal a good idea as the Socialist Front is already the largest opposition group. Dr Tan supports Tunku Abdul Rahman's greater Malaysia scheme but fears Communist influence in Singapore politics may jeopardize the prospects of success.
