The building in the centre was the famous "Lai Chun Yuen" 834-seater theatre built in 1887 which staged Cantonese operas. Located at the corner of Smith Street and Trengganu Street, it was badly damaged during World War II. After post-war renovations, the building was used as a merchandise shop and later a warehouse for street hawkers.
