View of beach along Tanjong Katong, on east coast of Singapore. On the right are seaside residences with steps leading down to the beach. The Foreshores Act required seaside houses be built at least 50 feet (or 15 metres) from shoreline. In the background are swimming enclosures and outhouses built on piles over the water. Outhouses, a common feature of seaside houses, varied from simple open pavilions to fully furnished chalets used for picnics and parties. Many of these were demolished during World War II and remaining ones all but disappeared when coastal land was reclaimed in the 1970s.
