MEMBERS OF THE KIWANIS CLUB - ALPHA CHAPTER MANNING THE HOTLINE WHERE CHILDREN CALL IN TO TELL THEM WHAT PRESENTS THEY WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS. THE IDEA OF RUNNING THIS TELEPHONE SERVICE FOR THE PUBLIC WAS FIRST MOOTED BY TIMES PUBLISHING'S SALES PROMOTION MANAGER, TAN SWEE LEONG. AS MANY CHILDREN STILL BELIEVED IN SANTA CLAUS, HE DECIDED THIS SERVICE WOULD HELP TO RETAIN SOME OF THE MAGIC OF CHRISTMAS. THE PLAN WAS FOR CHILDREN TO CALL IN THEIR REQUESTS AND THEN SUBSEQUENTLY FOR 'SANTA CLAUS' (MEMBERS OF THE KIWANIS CLUB - ALPHA CHAPTER) TO RING BACK THE REQUESTS TO THE PARENTS. SEVERAL PARENTS APPRECIATED THIS SERVICE, THOUGH A FEW EXPRESSED DISAPPOINTMENT AND EVEN ANGER AS THEY EXPECTED FREE GIFTS.
