Photo shows People's Action Party (PAP) members at the Anson by-election, with Mahmud Awang (third from right) as the PAP candidate contesting in the by-election. Other members present were Dr Toh Chin Chye, the Chairman of the PAP (extreme right), S Rajaratam, the Minister for Culture (extreme left), and other party supporters. The Anson by-election was held on 15 July 1961 after the sudden death of Baharuddin Bin Mohamed Ariff, the PAP assemblyman in Anson. In the by-election, Mahmud Awang lost to David Marshall of the Workers' Party by 546 votes.
