Photo shows a political rally held at the Victoria Memorial Hall. On the banner, the Chinese characters state the slogans "Learn from the Great Democratic Hero Lumumba" (left) and "Work hard towards completely wiping out Colonialism" (right) with the picture of Mr Patrice Lumumba in the middle. Mr Lumumba was a Congolese independence fighter, who later became the first legally elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Congo. Prior to the People's Action Party (PAP) winning the General Elections of 1959, it was a practice for the PAP and trade unions to look to inspirational political leaders such as Mr Lumumba, during the struggle against colonialism.
