Singapore was proclaimed a self-governing state on 3 June 1959. This was celebrated with National Loyalty Week which was held between 3 to 10 December 1959 and commenced with the installation of Yusof bin Ishak as the first Malayan-born Yang di-Pertuan Negara (Head of State). This photograph shows the newly-installed Yang Di-Pertuan Negara and the Cabinet and Legislative Assembly Members at the City Hall steps during the launch of National Loyalty Week. The new state flag is prominently displayed.
