TENDING THE LINES OPPOSITE THE CHARTERED BANK
The Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China was one of the earliest banks established in Singapore. It started with a branch in 1859 and as business took off, the Chartered Bank building was eventually erected next to the southern bank of the Singapore River at Raffles Place. It was demolished in 1981 to make way for a building over 40 storeys high. The bank was renamed Standard Chartered Bank in 1984 and the building at the site is now simply called Six Battery Road.
