FAMILIES IN THEIR HOMES AT CHINATOWN DURING CURFEW HOURS
Men staying home in Chinatown during curfew hours. They are probably tenants renting rooms (entrance to which is draped with curtain) in a shophouse. Before establishment of the Housing and Development Board (HDB) in 1960, it was common to find single units partitioned into rooms for rent. Curfew was imposed for about ten days by the British colonial government at height of unrest caused by students and members of the Singapore Chinese Middle Schools Students' Union (SCMSSU) protesting against decision to dissolve the SCMSSU as a communist-front organisation and subsequent dismissal of teachers and students who had participated in subversive activities.
