The man in the foreground is wearing a tarboosh (or fez), a red felt hat with a tassel attached to the top, that was popular during time of the Ottoman empire in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It was then worn by Christian, Jew and Muslim men alike. It continued to be worn by older Muslim men even after the fall of the empire.
