ROCHORE MARKET, SINGAPORE
Indian lady at Rochore market, Singapore. In the background are two chimneys belonging to Straits Ice Works (nearer) and Municipal Council Incinerator further away at Kelantan Lane. The bridge on right built over Rochore Canal connects Weld Road to Arab Street on the other side. Colonial action against cotton processing in India left many weavers without a livelihood. Many from the regions of Kadayanallur and Tenkasi arrived as families in Singapore and Malaya in the early 1900s. While the men went to work in the Tanjong Pagar area, the women operated in open markets, providing small food items, especially blended spices.
