CHINATOWN
Street scene and shophouses along China Street, looking towards Club Street and buildings on Ann Siang Hill (background). The first fully in view shophouse unit (from right) is 48 China Street, which is part of a two-storey unit with a mezzanine half floor. 48 China Street was the first (in 1918) and in the 1930s to be the ‘headquarters’ of a seafood (mainly crabs) distribution business. The stack of cane baskets in front of the shop was used to contain live crabs, while the trishaw nearby transported the baskets of live crabs to various wet markets. The shophouses on right are now part of China Square Central.
