Badminton player Wong Peng Soon was the first Asian to win the All-England Championships in 1950, 1951, 1952 and 1955 and was in the Malayan team that won the Thomas Cup championships in 1949, 1952 and 1955. He was the first Singaporean athlete to be conferred the Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1956 for services to sports in Malaya.
