CHULIA STREET, PENANG - STREET SCENE SHOWING ROAD WORKS BEING CARRIED OUT BY CONVICT LABOURERS
The building with two minarets (on the left) contains the tomb dedicated to shipping magnate and philanthropist Mahomed Noordin Merican (1802 – 1870). From the 1830s, he was a major shipper of rubber, pepper and textiles from the ports of Bombay, Calcutta, Nagapatnam, Aceh, Burma, Penang and Singapore. His name survives in the Singapore company F M Noordin Co owned by the family of one of his employees.
