PRIME MINISTER LEE KUAN YEW ATTENDS VALEDICTORY GARDEN PARTY AT PARLIAMENT HOUSE GARDEN
Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew hosting the valedictory dinner in the garden between Parliament House and its Annexe for 14 former People's Action Party (PAP) Members of Parliament (MPs) who stepped down in September 1988. Clockwise from Mr Lee are Dr Yeoh Ghim Seng, Mrs Lee, S Rajaratnam, E W Barker, and Mrs Gloria Barker. Dr Yeoh, MP for Joo Chiat, has been the Speaker of Parliament for nearly 19 of the 23 years that Singapore has been independent. He was elected in 1966. Dr Yeoh is now a surgeon in private practice. Mr Rajaratnam, Senior Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, is the oldest among the 14 retiring Members of Parliament and has represented Kampong Glam since 1959 when he was first elected. Mr Barker, Minister for Law, has been MP for Tanglin since 1963 when he was first elected. Mr Barker is now chairman of the Bukit Turf Club.
