One of the highlights of the Chinatown light-up for Chinese New Year was a Peranakan play staged at the Kreta Ayer People's Theatre. The Kreta Ayer People's Theatre evolved from an open-air stage in 1969 after several major expansion and redevelopment projects. Kreta Ayer People's Theatre is located at the hill-top of Banda Street and faces Kreta Ayer Road. The Peranakan Association of Singapore and a Malacca Peranakan arts group staged this play. In this wedding scene, the bride is "unveiled" and the bride and groom see each other for the first time. Upon meeting the bridegroom, the bride raises her folded arms slowly in time to serunee music.
