Traditional Chinese Medicine in Singapore
About Project
This project offers insight into the practice of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which originated in ancient China and has been around for thousands of years. It also details the different facets of its operation in Singapore, especially during the 1970s and the 1980s.
Interviewees touch on topics like the handling of herbs and prescriptions, the relationship between the price of herbs and their medicinal value, the nature of business and the profile of customers in the past, as well as the regulation of traditional Chinese medicine in Singapore.
Interviewees include Ho Beng Teng, who taught in a private TCM school after attending the Singapore Chinese Physicians’ Training College, and Dr Tan Hong Leng, who was a clinical instructor at Chung Hwa Free Clinic and was involved in the formation of the Society of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Singapore).
