About Project

The Communities of Singapore project records the early life, customs, traditions, religions, institutions and social relations of early immigrants and inhabitants of Singapore. Part 3 covers the Malay community and traces their regional roots in Malaya/Malaysia and various islands of the Indonesian archipelago. It covers the social history and social changes of the community from the 1930s to 1970s. Some topics include the tracing of ancestral links, migration, early life in Singapore, family life, work, social relations, customs and traditions, religion, and community activities of different ethnic subgroups: Arab, Ambonese, Banjanese, Minangkabau, Javanese, Bajrai and Boyanese.
