SWD 88-50 Vol 1
Far Eastern Relief Fund to Assist Permanent Residents repatriated to U.K. or to the Dominions
The file covered correspondence between the banks and Secretary of Social Welfare (SSW) who was also Chairman of the Far Eastern Relief Fund (FERF) over receipts of cheques made to FERF from fixed deposits.  The Fund was used for the relief of families who were rendered destitute arising from the Japanese Occupation in Singapore.  The donor of the fund was FERF London.  Page 50 contained a note on the background of the Fund as well as the Malayan War Distress Fund which was raised by people of Malaya in 1941 when the Japanese invaded Malaya.
The policy then was that `the victims and their families should be assisted in the best possible way to enable them to rehabilitate themselves at the earliest possible, but due consideration to be given to chronic cases such as the aged who would be dependent on the Fund for assistance as long as they lived’.  Examples of assistance given under the fund included pigs and poultry rearing, training in vegetable farming, building a farm with huts for the farmers’ stay, purchase of aluminum and peg legs for amputated cases, and provision of rent and clothing allowance.
