Singapore Street Directory and Guide (Chinese Version)
43 pgs – This file shows the discussions among various government agencies (primarily the Chief Surveyor, the Information Services of Ministry of Culture, the Government Printer and Office of Deputy Chief Secretary) on the feasibility of producing a Chinese version of the “Singapore Street Directory and Guide” to go with the English one. The proposal was mooted by the Chief Surveyor who felt that such a publication would find a ready market among the Chinese. Discussions revolved around issues like whether a government agency or a private company should undertake the task, the best modus operandi to execute it and whether a curtailed version should first be produced for government departments. The project eventually stalled over the absence of a list of official road, street and place names in Chinese and the lack of expertise for compiling such a list. File contents comprised largely of correspondence between agencies but towards the end, there was a letter from Nanyang Printers to the Chief Surveyor (dated 19 January 1959) offering to produce a Chinese version of the Street Directory. However, the file did not contain the government’s response to the letter.
