The Ministry of National Development (MND) was formed in July 1957. In 1959, the PAP Government absorbed the City Council into the central government and most of the City Council's functions were transferred to the Ministry of National Development (MND). In August 1965 it was merged with the Ministry of Law and became the Ministry of Law and National Development. These two ministries were split in 1975.
The MND is responsible for the physical development of Singapore. It is tasked to build a world-class city, one that is vibrant for business; pleasant and gracious for living; and exciting for recreation. It achieves this through land-use planning for urban redevelopment, public housing, the construction industry, parks and recreation, and primary production facilities. Its regulatory functions include state and city planning and building control, car parks management, and the import and export of agricultural and animal products.
