The Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRTC) was set up in 1983 ti build and manage the train network. In 1987, the operating arm Singapore Mass Rapid Transit Limited was formed to operate the MRT lines, and the services began in Nov 1987. In July 2000 SMRT Corporation Ltd (SMRT) was incorporated and listed on te Singapore Exchange.
