National University of Singapore
The National University of Singapore (NUS)is Singapore's oldest university. It can be traced back to 1905, with the founding of the Straits Settlements and the Federated Malalay States Government Medical School, the first institution of higher learning in Singapore. This was renamed the King Edward VII Medical School in 1913, and renamed again as King Edward VII College of Medicine in 1921.
In 1949, the College of Medicine and Raffles College were merged to form the University of Malaya, which had full degree-granting powers. Ten years later, autonomous divisions of the university were set up in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The two governments then decided to have separate national universities. This led to the establishment of the Univesity of Singapore in 1962. On 8 August 1980, the University of Singapore merged with the Nanyang University to become the National University of Singaopre.
