Every act of sacrifice that is coupled with compassion is more likely to deliver a lasting effect, and will allow others to appreciate our contributions and the benefits that they in turn received. Mufti of Singapore, Dr Mohamed Fatris Bakaram made the call to Muslims in Singapore in his Eiduladha sermon. The sermon, which was shared and delivered at 70 mosques island wide, also reminded the community about the meaning of Eiduladha, and while we constantly make sacrifices in our daily lives, we should never neglect mercy and compassion in our sacrificial acts.

Dr Fatris Bakaram delivered his sermon to 4,500 congregants at Masjid Al-Mawaddah this morning. Joining in the prayers were President Halimah Yaacob and Minister for the Environment and Water Resources and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs, Mr Masagos Zulkifli.

Speaking to the media after the prayers, Mr Masagos echoed Mufti’s assertion for the community to include mercy and compassion in the community’s daily acts. Minister also spoke about the true meaning behind the sacrificial act (korban). 

"In performing the korban, they will also be distributing the meat to the poor and needy. It is also as an expression of gratitude for having the extra means of which they can now share with others. And this is the spirit that Muslims should have.”

In line with the spirit of compassion and unity, President Halimah and Mr Masagos also handed gift hampers to 20 beneficiaries of Project GOLD, a newly launched social initiative between Masjid Al-Mawaddah and Sengkang South Consultative Citizens Committee (CCC). Under this initiative, individual donors and corporate sponsors identified by Sengkang South CCC had collectively raised $80,000 to help low income families under Masjid Al-Mawaddah’s financial assistance scheme.
