ENHANCING TIES BETWEEN BRUNEI AND SINGAPORE BROADCASTERS THROUGH YOUTH PROGRAMMES

Sixteen youths from Brunei Darussalam and Singapore will take part in two reality television programmes, GRID and Xpedisi Siswa.  Jointly produced by Singapore's Mediacorp and Radio Television Brunei (RTB) under the auspices of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Ministry of Communication and Information of Singapore and Brunei’s Prime Minister’s Office, the programmes aim to promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation among students, broadcasters and officials from both countries.

2          Yang Mulia Awang Haji Mohammed Riza bin Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mohd Yunos, Brunei’s Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office, will lead a delegation of officials, broadcasters and students to Singapore on 22 September 2016, at the invitation of Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary for Education and Social and Family Development and be hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Information.

3          Yang Mulia Awang Haji Mohammed Riza and Associate Professor Faishal will be the guests of honour for the recording of GRID and Xpedisi Siswa.  Both programmes will be recorded in front of a “live” audience at MediaCorp’s Studio One on 23 September 2016, and they will be televised in Singapore in October 2016.

4          GRID is a one-hour youth-oriented programme where students from Brunei and Singapore share their knowledge, experiences and understanding of each other’s culture and interests. This year’s theme is “Culinary Arts”, which will give the youth an opportunity to showcase their cooking skills.

5          Xpedisi Siswa is a one-hour reality TV programme which challenges the ability of the participants to adapt to new environments and apply their skills through experiential learning.  With the theme of “Green Volunteerism” this year, the youth will journey to Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve to participate in mangrove cleaning and  learn about migratory birds.  They will also go on a learning journey to Pulau Ubin and other park tours.  The students will share their experiences of the expedition at the MediaCorp studio recording.

6          The MOU was originally signed in 1990, and updated in 2014 to include cooperation in the field of Information.  In its 26th year, the MOU  encompasses various areas of cooperation including broadcast programme exchanges, joint productions, as well as education, training and research.
