Record 34 undergraduates receive the MPA Global Internship Award 2016

Recipients from new disciplines, such as computing and engineering, add on to the MPA GIA talent pool for a global experience in a diverse maritime industry

34 undergraduates received the MPA Global Internship Awards (GIA) from Mr Andrew Tan, Chief Executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), at the award ceremony this evening. Launched in 2013, the MPA GIA programme presents undergraduates from the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), National University of Singapore (NUS), and Singapore Management University (SMU) with opportunities to gain insights into the diverse and global nature of the maritime industry. Recipients will experience internships with 23 companies from diverse maritime sectors, including shipping, offshore, broking, finance, insurance and legal.

2     This year, MPA received a record of over 250 applications for the MPA GIA. This is double the number of applications received last year. A rigorous selection process identified 34 recipients from both maritime disciplines and non-maritime-related disciplines, such as engineering, computing and law.

3     Said Ms Marilyn Tor, the first female mechanical engineering recipient of the MPA GIA, “I am looking forward to my internship with BP Singapore, where I will be working on a project on the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) business. I will also have the opportunity to spend 4 weeks in the UK as part of the internship and I am sure the MPA GIA experience will open doors to the maritime sector for me in the future.”

4     Mr Taufiq Bin Azahari, a Maritime Studies student at Nanyang Technological University who will be interning at Teekay Navion Offshore Loading Pte Ltd, shared, “The maritime industry is a very diverse sector with many career opportunities. The internship with Teekay under the GIA programme will provide me with the opportunity to apply what I have learnt to the job and readies me for a career in the maritime sector upon graduation.”

5     Under the MPA GIA programme, students will undergo a 10-week internship programme that includes overseas stint of up to four weeks covering Australasia, Europe, India, the Middle East and South America. To date, a total of 88 students have benefitted from the MPA GIA programme since its launch.

6     Mr Andrew Tan, Chief Executive, MPA said,. “I am very much encouraged that despite the current shipping downturn, we had double the number of applicants and a bumper 34 awardees this year. This is testament to the growing awareness of the diverse opportunities that the maritime sector has to offer to students from non-maritime disciplines. It also demonstrates the commitment on the part of maritime companies in Singapore in investing in their pipeline of future talents. We look forward to the contribution of these young talents in shaping Singapore’s future as a leading international maritime centre.”
