NEW COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION SPACE FOR DEFENCE ENGINEERS

NEW COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION SPACE FOR DEFENCE ENGINEERS

The new DSTA Integrated Complex which will bring all DSTA staff under one roof to promote greater collaboration and innovation, was officially opened by Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen this afternoon.

The launch of this complex marks a milestone in DSTA’s development as a member of the Defence Technology Community (DTC), which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. It also signifies DSTA’s commitment to create and transform the working environment to reap the collective multidisciplinary expertise of our defence engineers and technologists.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Ng said, “Our security challenges, whether in the past, present or future will require technology to provide solutions beyond more men and machines… whether they are security threats from extremists, cyber warfare, biological pandemics, hybrid warfare, all of these in our security arena require our defence engineers and scientists to take a cross-disciplinary approach to problem-solving and innovation. If you look around, this building facilitates that. It breaks down the barriers between engineers, technologists, conceptors, implementers, innovators and the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).”

The integrated complex comprises the existing DTTA[1] and a new 12-storey extension block. It shows the DSTA spirit of embracing continuity and change through seamless integration between the old and new. The integrated complex will provide a conducive environment with more work, collaboration and laboratory spaces. For example, laboratory and training spaces are easily reconfigurable, and work spaces feature multiple breakout areas to promote increased interactions, mutual learning and foster teamwork. DSTA had managed the development of the extension block without disruption of operations in DTTA. Currently, some 3,000 DSTA staff are housed across three offices in Science Park, Connection One and Defence Technology Tower A (DTTA).

At the event, Dr Ng also launched the commemorative book The DSTA Story, 2000 – 2015. The book showcases DSTA’s achievements, and how the organisation has evolved in tandem with the SAF over the years to provide Singapore with a technological edge in defence.

Dr Ng said: “(DSTA)’s greatest achievements for Singapore was that you build for Singapore our own defence science capabilities which would prove invaluable in upgrading and building not only discrete components of the SAF orbat, but integrating them so that indeed the whole is larger than the sum of its parts… The defence technology community members have played an integral role in transforming the SAF into a lean, networked and lethal fighting force. You have new technologies which allow us precision fires, advanced communications and information technology, as well as unmanned vehicles, to defeat potential adversaries.”
