ETPL’S MEDIA EXPLOITS 2012 TO SHOWCASE ECOSYSTEM OF DIGITAL MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES: FROM EARLY-STAGE TO COMMERCIALISATION
Aimed at industries from Advertising and Media to Telco and Gaming, event features 40 A*STAR technologies, applications and partner products
Singapore, November 1, 2012 – Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd (ETPL), the technology transfer arm of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), today announced that its industry seminar and networking event, Media Exploits 2012, will feature 40 home-grown technologies and commercial solutions from across the A*STAR ecosystem. Partners and start-ups will unveil a variety of new applications and solutions in areas ranging from mobile advertising and video streaming to gaming and analytics.
To be held on Thursday, 1 November, the event, with a “Go-To-Market” theme, showcases how ETPL creates an ecosystem for the commercialisation of digital media technologies. In this event, ETPL and their partners will exhibit patented and patent-pending A*STAR technologies, products and solutions aimed at businesses in the Hospitality, Travel, Healthcare, F&B, Property, Advertising, Education, Telecommunications and Media industries. About 350 attendees are expected at the event.
“Media Exploits provides a forum for players in diverse segments of the Digital Media technology commercialisation ecosystem to gather, exchange ideas, explore new partnerships and find out about new technologies,” said Lee Han Boon, Senior Vice President of Science and Engineering Licensing at ETPL.
As A*STAR’s technology transfer arm, ETPL actively manages the intellectual property of the new technologies developed and helps bring them to market by creating licensing, spin-off opportunities and networking events for a more vibrant ecosystem of researchers, industry players and entrepreneurs.
“Media Exploits 2011, which showcased 15 early-stage technologies and potential business solutions in the Digital Media space, received extremely positive response from advertising and marketing entities, technology companies, investors, incubators, entrepreneurs and various government agencies,” Han Boon said.
“This year, we will add to the depth of the event by demonstrating technologies that our licensees and spin-offs have adopted and are already deploying for commercial benefit. These include applications and solutions aimed at helping businesses optimise their resources, create new offerings and improve customer service.”
Media Exploits 2012 will showcase applications, analytics, platforms, and interactive technologies. Among the companies showcasing their solutions are start-ups that have been supported by ETPL and its partners, industry players and incubators. These include:
● HexaLotus: a spin-off from The Singapore Bioimaging Consortium (SBIC), HexaLotus offers a web-based liver image processing service for pre-operative surgical planning and for teaching. Primarily aimed at liver surgeons and interventional radiologists, its LiverSuite and LiverServ offerings enable medical practitioners to perform tasks including segment liver objects, compare liver transplant donors and recipients, and conduct liver surgery risk analysis more efficiently. LiverServ also allows hospitals to upload images on the HexaLotus server for processing and subsequent download by other parties.
● Knorex: The company licensed Snap2Tell mobile image recognition technology from the Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) for its interactive advertising system, Knorex ARise™. The technology matches a “query” image, captured using iPhone or iPad, against a database of images on a remote server. An Augmented Reality platform, it transforms advertisement and editorial content from printed material or physical media into interactive media such as multimedia content, social media, forms and 3D images. Publishers and advertisers can in turn track and measure the results and improve targeting.
The system enables advertisers to interact with readers by embedding value-added content beyond the print advertisement. Readers, for instance, can use their smartphones to hover over specially marked pages to view interactive elements such as videos, photo galleries, maps and downloadable discount coupons. Data on readers’ interactivity and responses to the advertisement can then be further analysed. Malaysia’s The Star newspaper, which uses Knorex ARise™, has credited this technology with contributing to new revenue streams.
● Reachfield IT Solutions: The company will showcase VISION - Next Frontier for Digital Video, a patented cloud service that enables fast and adaptable digital video streaming based on a single MP4 source file. The company has produced a platform that controls, manages and disseminates digital content to users.
This product has potential for applications in the government, education and media sectors. Students from NUS High are using this service to stream videos on a variety of devices using different network options including wireless, 3G, and Wi-Fi. Because the technology automatically adjusts to differences in bandwidth, uninterrupted video streaming can be achieved without “buffering” or delays in the stream
● SocioScale: A spin-off from A*STAR’s Data Storage Institute (DSI), SocioScale produces Activfy Concierge - an iPad-based concierge analytics solution that enables hotels to analyse guest activity and habits based on real-time data. Using Activfy’s insights generated from back-end data, hotels can tailor their offerings and better respond to guest requirements and preferences. SocioScale was incubated and funded by ETPL to help speed up its go-to-market efforts.
● VDancer Revolution: Licensed by Fatfish Medialab, VDancer Revolution is a new genre of dance games on mobile devices. VDancer was built from state-of-art Dance! 3D software technology licensed through ETPL from I2R. This 3D technology allows users to have bi-directional, live, and face-to-face dance interaction with a virtual character that dances in sync with music accompaniment and responds to the user's actions. In most commercial dance games, the movements of the “virtual” dancer are pre-recorded for pre-selected songs. VDancer Revolution, however, generates real-time dance moves for any genre of music.
