PRESS RELEASE
Dear Editor,
CHEER-O-MANIA 2011
They poke, instant message and tweet. But have Singaporean youths lost the art of a good old-fashion face-to-face “Hello”?
Cheer-O-Mania 2011 adopted the theme of ‘Greetings’ to try to get youths to realise the positive impact of greetings. Through this cheer-dance competition, some 300 student participants had to demonstrate how greetings are an extension of the values of kindness and graciousness. The Finals was held at United Square Shopping Mall B1 Atrium on 6 Aug.
Whether you say ‘What’s up?’, ‘How are you?’ or a simple ‘Hihi’, greetings are the first step you take when making new friends. Proper greetings like 'Good morning' are also a means to show respect to teachers or parents. In multi-lingual Singapore, different languages can be used to convey greetings, and hand gestures such as a wave or a high-five are non-verbal means to communicate greetings.
Organised by the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM), this exciting cheer-dance competition is one way to show to children and youths that kindness can be fun. Through the competition, SKM also hopes that participants will feel the powerful effects of kindness and graciousness.
The competition was divided into two categories – Primary and Secondary. A total of 10 teams from Primary schools, and seven teams from Secondary schools competed for top three award placing in each category.
The results were:

A panel of three judges scored the teams based on their creativity, technical executions and how well they integrated the theme of ‘greetings’ into their performances. Top teams in each category were awarded trophies and medals along with cash prizes.
A ‘Most Gracious Team’ award was also given to St Stephen’s School. This award was determined by votes from fellow participants and spectators.
