MCYS BUILDING DRESSED UP TO CELEBRATE INAUGURAL 2010 YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

With 106 days to go till the inaugural Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG), government and public sector agencies are stepping up efforts to dress up their office buildings to welcome the Games to Singapore.

2          Leading the way is the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) which held its unveiling ceremony of the jazzed-up MCYS building facade today, in support of the Singapore 2010 YOG. The decorations included a nine-storey YOG banner on the exterior of the building, which can be seen from the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). As part of the launch celebrations, MCYS staff and invited guests also tried their hands at YOG sports and posed for photos with the YOG mascots Lyo and Merly.

3          Several other public sector agencies will also be dressing up their buildings and offices with the Youth Olympic Games theme. The decorations include building and lamp post banners, billboards, pillar wraps and posters. YOG road shows will also be held at various locations around Singapore in the coming months to bring the Games closer to the community. These road shows will include elements such as Games, performances, YOG mascots, and quizzes.

4          Individuals, communities and organisations are encouraged to show their support for the inaugural Games. Everyone be part of the YOG celebration events, purchase tickets to cheer Team Singapore athletes on, and rally one another to welcome the world together.

5          Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, said, “The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games is not just an event for youth. It is an event for all Singaporeans. It will also be the very first time the world will experience a Youth Olympic Games, so we are breaking new ground. We hope many individuals, organisations, and communities will be inspired by the spirit of the Games, and come forward to celebrate, and to play a part in helping Singapore host the Games. This can range from volunteering with the Games Organising Committee, to cheering the YOG torch runners, to dressing your house or apartment to celebrate the Games, to supporting the athletes at the stadiums, to being gracious hosts to the foreign athletes and visitors who will be in Singapore for the Games. I would encourage all Singaporeans to take a personal stake in the Games. Let’s make history together.”
