1              On 18 January 2007, the President, on the nomination of the Special Select Committee of Parliament, appointed nine persons as nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs) for a two and a half year term. The term of service of the nine Nominated Members of Parliament will expire on 17 July 2009.

 

2          The Special Select Committee had invited the general public and functional groups to submit names of persons for its consideration for appointment as NMPs in April 2009. Submissions closed on 11 May 2009 and a total of 46 proposal forms were received. Apart from 3 invalid proposal forms, the Committee considered all 43 eligible candidates in its assessment of suitable candidates for appointment as NMPs.

 

3                    At the conclusion of their deliberations, the Special Select Committee nominated the following nine persons to the President to fill the NMP vacancies that will arise. Their term of appointment as NMPs will commence on 18 July 2009:

(2)        Mr Terry Lee Kok Hua

 

(3)        Mrs Mildred Tan-Sim Beng Mei

 

(4)        Assoc Prof Paulin Tay Straughan

 

(5)        Mr Teo Siong Seng

 

(6)        Mr Viswaroopan s/o Sadasivan           

 

(7)        Mr Laurence Wee Yoke Thong

 

(8)        Ms Audrey Wong Wai Yen

 

(9)        Ms Joscelin Yeo Wei Ling
