SINGAPORE PARTICIPATES IN PROLIFERATION SECURITY INITIATIVE EXERCISE

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is participating in Exercise Pacific Shield 07 - a multinational counter-proliferation maritime interdiction exercise held under the ambit of the Proliferation Security Initiative (PSI). Hosted by Japan, the exercise is held in Japan's eastern sea area off Izu Oshima, and at the ports of Yokosuka and Yokohama from Oct 13 to 15. Besides Singapore, the other participants include Australia, France, Japan, New Zealand, the UK and the US. Observer countries at the exercise include Brunei, India, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and Vietnam.

PSI is an international effort to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and WMD-related materials. It is consistent with national legal authorities and international law and frameworks. Singapore fully supports PSI along with other counter-proliferation efforts and has been participating actively in PSI since its inception in 2003. The SAF, as a professional and operationally-ready force that is able to take on a wide spectrum of missions, partners other security agencies in dealing with such threats. Such participation aids to validate and refine our operational capabilities against the proliferation of WMD.
