OFFICIAL VISIT OF CARDINAL RENATO RAFFAELE MARTINO FOR THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN SINGAPORE AND THE HOLY SEE 20 - 24 JUNE 2006

 

                   His Eminence Cardinal Renato Raffaele Martino will make an official visit to Singapore from 20 - 24 June 2006 at the invitation of Foreign Minister George Yeo. 

 

                   Cardinal Martino is the President for the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant Peoples.  Cardinal Martino has been appointed as the Special Envoy of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI to celebrations to be held in Singapore to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and the Holy See. 

 

                   During his visit, Cardinal Martino will call on President S R Nathan and Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.  Foreign Minister George Yeo will also meet and host a lunch in honour of Cardinal Martino. 

 

                   Cardinal Martino will also give a public lecture entitled "The Role of Religions in Promoting Peace and Solidarity and Denouncing Terrorism" organised by the Institute of Policy Studies.  Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, will deliver the introductory remarks at the lecture.  In conjunction with this event, Minister Balakrishnan and Cardinal Martino will meet with community and religious leaders of Singapore.
